Camera used was a Kodak Z612 EasyShare.  The picture was taken Friday, Oct. 23rd, 2009, at the old Monterey cemetery.   The picture was solarized, and then the exposure settings were played with.

Okay, this was not my fault.  I simply went to take a picture or two.  But, remember how Luke was pulled by The Force?  This was a lot like that.  I had no will of my own. A force like the moon pulls the tides, irresistible, unrelenting, unending, until the first bite of a Bordeaux washes across your taste buds.  Okay maybe it was the fifth or sixth Bordeaux, you know how it is!

PICTURE PERFECT -- CAPTURE AND CAPTION

This was taken several weeks ago at the annual Sand City Artists and Art Festival. The camera is a Kodak Z612

PICTURE PERFECT: I SPY W/ MY LITTLE EYE A RED ROTARY WINGED AIRCRAFT (AND A RODENT)

This was taken on the afternoon of Sept 24th, on Highway one, near Ben Lomond, this copter was working with several ground crews mopping up hot spots from the large wild fire they had earlier in the week.  The camera is a Kodak EasyShare Z612, using auto focus, and the telephoto lens.  (The background photo is the helicopter filling his bucket not more than a couple of hundred yards from the highway, and low and behold, I noticed a rodent peeking from a rock!!  Okay, I fess up, I added the rodent because my friend, who will go nameless for modesty's sake, was noticing that no one chose the word Rodent, a perfectly wonderful word, as their "R' theme!)

Once fiery liquid, Storm lashed waves frozen in time, testament to the turmoil  birth of volcanic glass.

I am going to break the rules but only in response to some questions, this is the piece of obsidian that the macro was taken from.  The picture was taken in my back yard.  The rock is from the Medicine Lake area  east of Mt. Shasta.  The rock is only slightly bigger than my hand.

PICTURE PERFECT COMP. 1 SEASONS

As I was trying to explain, we do not really have seasons here.  We have the Dry and the Wet, also called the Green and the Brown seasons, in areas of the state they call them the Wet and the Fire Seasons.  We do not really have leaves that change color to Nature's palette, no white snow, driven or piled into fantastic shapes, or ice reflecting sunlight light as a prismed mirror. But what we do have are people who somehow think jumping out of a perfectly good airplane is a fun thing to do.  And they do not let our marine layer (fog) stop them, they just dive through it, as long as it is not hugging the ground.  I noticed they rather looked like colorful falling leaves, except for the screaming.

Hard to chose as a lot of the pictures are of places that are part of me, and  memories shared.  I decided on MAGIC CARPET.  It is nothing I did really, Mom Nature  put it all together, from the angle of the sun, to the clouds, the waves, and especially the color of the bloom.  This is on the shore of the Pacific, looking back towards Lovers Point in Pacific Grove.  This wonder is actually known locally as the Magic Carpet, or Pacific Grove's Magic Carpet.  Enjoy and smell the salt air.

A word of caution here; if Gator ever starts in with the Alligator Tears (believe me they are a lot worse than Crocodile Tears) get out of visual range as fast as you can.  If you don't, your willpower turns to watery mush. . .Do you think I wanted to post music against the rules? At least I pulled that wee bit of WP from some recess and set the player to manual. . .

THE LIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TUNNEL

Cave,  Shasta-Trinity National Forest, near Medicine Lake

I immediately thought of this one, it was taken, wow, it is five years now???!!!  I have no concept of time anymore.  This was taken with a Sony Mavica. 

 I   filled in on the right of the cave mouth with a cloning tool, to get the feeling of a small entrance.  And used the one differently color rock  near the center bottom of the entrance to make two other "figures", hopefully for a bit of a spooky feeling.

Oh Boy!!!  I was really looking forward to this one!!! Heather chose the letter "B" as our theme.  And what is the first thing a red blooded American male thinks of?  Well yes, it might be beer, and yes it might be baseball for some of us, but for the great majority of us, the eternally immature,  it is BOOBIES!!!  I headed down to the beach, as it was a beautiful day here, but it did not turn out as well as I had hoped.

Off the Beaten Path

Artillery Impact Zone at the former Ft. Ord, Calif.

And yes, they are still catching people wandering in. . .

Some parts of the zone had been in use from the 1920s' up until the 7th Infantry Division, Light Fighters and Ft. Ord were deactivated in the 1990s. Everything from grenades, morters, artillery pieces, various hand held rockets, Heavy caliber anti-aircraft guns, to tanks had been fired into the impact zones over the years.

My father served in the 76th Field Artillery in the 1930s, based at the Presideo in Monterey, but trained on the guns at what would be the future Ft. Ord.  They still used horse drawn artillery, and used the French 75mm field piece of WWI.

PICTURE PERFECT -- EXTREME

Extreme Persistance.  This was taken  a couple of months ago at Moss Landing, Ca.  A boat and pedestrian dock has been taken over by Sea Lions.  Space was at a premium, with some sea lions stacked three high; but these were the smaller and all about the same size.   Now the big bulls slept in comfort, they just pushed the smaller ones aside and made their own room.  And if one tried to crawl on top the old bulls just shook them off.  EXCEPT one very persistant, and for a Sea Lion a very pretty young thing.  She tried to crawl up, and was thrown off.  Then she started her wiles, she just eased in beside him, then leaned, then put her head on him, then with no resistance from the Bull, or perhaps some communication passed between the two that I did realize, she put her head further onto him, then later eased up her front flippers on  him, and then laid her head down again,  (Do Sea Lions whisper sweet nothings to each other?), then more of her torso and weight on the bull, and finally a last dainty lunge and was completely on top.  I am sure the Bulls blubber felt better than any memory foam mattress, and self heated too!!!   A Sea Lion Princess who knows how to get her way. . .

LINES -- THE PICTURE PERFECT THEME OF THE WEEK

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.  How many  times had we heard that in geometry class over our school years.  But the true beauty of lines is when Mother Nature lets them loose, to meander, and find their own ways.

PICTURE PERFECT --- COLD

A picture from inside an ice cave.  It can be over 100 degrees outside, but inside some of the lave tube caves, there is year round ice.  This is a frozen stream in one, later on in the year this will melt, but still deeper in the cave, ice there will be.  (That is a size eleven hiking boot for size reference.)

Okay I know only one pic allowed, but I cannot resist, and will gladly surrender myself to a severe beating with peacock feathers.   This is a ice wall in the same cave, the different freezing layers came out much better than we expected.  It was about 4 to 5 foot high, and 6 feet or so wide:

PICTURE PERFECT ---- PEACE

This was the view from a house we sat last month, while our friends were in Tahoe.  This is taken from the front steps, early morning, Sun rising behind us in the East, the Moon taking its' time to set in the West, playing tag with Mt. Shasta's peaks.  Wood steps, crisp morning air, clear sky, hot coffee, a Master Piece given freely by the Creator, and someone you love to share it all with.  At peace on a peaceful morning.

(I had one picture with the moon focused, and another with Mt. Shasta in focus, but not one with both in focus, so I cut out the good moon, and put it over the fuzzy moon in the good Mt. Shasta Picture--JohnOh)

PICTURE PERFECT HANDMADE

The only piece of furniture I have left that I made was too hard to get too, it was just a small shelf stool/table. So I dug out an old photo album and will share this one with you. 

1979,  Arcata, Humboldt County California, one of the most beautiful places in California. I produced the custom  furniture orders in a Redwood Burl factory.  What was nice about this is we used already cut down and rejected wood, some has been laying in the forest or washed up on the beaches for years and years. Ten and Twelve inch skill saws, routers, 7" disc sander, 4" belt sander,  and a huge old bandsaw that I secretly called the Emasculator.  It had a very nasty habit of throwing blades. Most of the shaping on the large redwood slabs was done with a chain saw..  

The only nails and screws used were in the drawer unit. Also used a smaller  sander both disc and finish,  and hand rasps to shape the front pieces of that. Everything else sat in mortises and then bolted together with angle plates.  Most of these went overseas, so they were designed to break down into individual pieces for packing in sea-land containers.

I called these, The Flintstone Line, but not in front of customers. . .

That is yours truly in a younger day, where I still had the ability to grow hair.
