A picture from inside an ice cave. It can be over 100 degrees outside, but inside some of the lave tube caves, there is year round ice. This is a frozen stream in one, later on in the year this will melt, but still deeper in the cave, ice there will be. (That is a size eleven hiking boot for size reference.)
Camera was a Kodak EasyShare Z612.
Okay I know only one pic allowed, but I cannot resist, and will gladly surrender myself to a severe beating with peacock feathers. This is a ice wall in the same cave, the different freezing layers came out much better than we expected. It was about 4 to 5 foot high, and 6 feet or so wide:
That is a really cool picture. Wow.
ReplyDeletethat ice looks sooo cool John! Is it the rock under it or the actual ice that has all the swirls in it?
ReplyDeleteNice shot. We have a similar cave in Turkey.

A combination of effects, some are from the reflections from the rocks, other swirls are in the ice, I think that might be by some surface melting and refreezing.
ReplyDeleteSo cool John!!!

Shhhhh, between you and me, that is how I found this particular section of ice, the rock my foot is on kept me from slipping further. Peacock feathers NOT attached to the peacock YES; cacti stems of any type NO, I hope this answers your questions. ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou know me, tough as nails, no peacock feather will get the best of me, so am waiting in anticipation of the next session of corporal punishment. . .
ReplyDeleteOh YESSS!!!! I mean, Oh NOOOOOO!!

Not in the Lava Beds proper but close, Dot Jean cave to the west and south of the Beds. Our friend Kathy showed us where this one is, sits by itself in a fairly large lava flow, and looking at some of the collasped lava fields I am sure there are more undiscovered tube caves in the flow. At the back of the cave you can make out at least two, I think three other tube caves running under Dot Jean, a verticle drop, hard to judge how far, and thick ice in the lower tubes everytime we have been there
ReplyDeletewow! that's interesting ... I have never been in a cave that had ice year round.. very nice! http://lilwolfsis.multiply.com/journal/item/384/Picture_Perfect_COLD
ReplyDeleteBeen there, done that!! OUCH!! Depth perception is lacking in those caves!!
ReplyDeleteGreat shot, but more fascinating story. I wouldn't have imagined.

I used to do a lot of fourteener trekking in all the years I lived in the Colorado Rockies. These are quite interesting, your cave shots. Where exactly were they taken? Do you mountain climb as well?
