OFF THE BEATEN PATH ---> Picture Perfect for May 29th, 2009

Welcome to

P I C T U R E  P E R F E C T

...oOo...

Each week a new theme will be posted here on Friday morningYou are invited to put up your best picture on your own blog with that theme in mind, and you do have the whole weekend to post your picture, so there is no rush

Remember it should be just  ONE and ORIGINAL, taken by YOU,and not off the internet,

Then come back and leave a comment on this page in the comment box so that everyone can link to your blog and see your photo. Don't forget to OPEN your page to EVERYONE for that day.

By all means mention your camera and lens used, and if the picture has been altered or enhanced in any way, so we can all learn and improve our techniques.

Try and post a decent size picture on your blog page for an increased WOW factor. Often so much is lost or distorted if the size is too big or too small.

Remember this is NOT a competition, this about being creative having fun and being supportive of one another.

Out of the box thinking is encouraged.

~ Have FUN out there! ~

This week it's Cherie hosting...and the theme she has chosen is

Off the Beaten Path

Photobucket

Artillery Impact Zone at the former Ft. Ord, Calif.

And yes, they are still catching people wandering in. . .

Some parts of the zone had been in use from the 1920s' up until the 7th Infantry Division, Light Fighters and Ft. Ord were deactivated in the 1990s. Everything from grenades, morters, artillery pieces, various hand held rockets, Heavy caliber anti-aircraft guns, to tanks had been fired into the impact zones over the years.

My father served in the 76th Field Artillery in the 1930s, based at the Presideo in Monterey, but trained on the guns at what would be the future Ft. Ord.  They still used horse drawn artillery, and used the French 75mm field piece of WWI.

  4. Well you wouldn't have to tell me twice!!!
If I doubted the danger at first glance (NOT)... Explosives would get my attention!
How interesting the history there!!! Would imagine with your Dad's history at what became the new Ft. Ord... you find the history even more fascinating!!! Horse drawn artillery ~ I found myself thinking that was even longer ago than the 20s and 30's!

  10. The 11th Mounted (horse) Cavalry was also stationed at the presidio at the same time, if I remember the history it was one of the last Horse mounted cavalry. Their history is really interesting, goes back to the punitive raids into Mexico during under General Pershing, chasing Pancho Villa.

  15. Most of Geronimo is buried there, His skull and a couple of other bones are in Harvard at the Skull and Bones Society courtesy of a couple of college boy "pranksters" in the early 20's.

  16. When the Calvary went mechanized, the Soldiers that rode, took care of and loved their mounts were ordered to shoot them. A select few, refused their orders and got 400 to Canada. Of course they also had to stay in Canada because of stealing gov't property and desertion.

  20. That story involves the 12th Cavalry, though most military historians do not give the story much credit. You might enjoy this article from MilitaryHistoryOnLine, discussing the story and the movie, IN DEFENSE OF HONOR, that was claimed to be based on facts. . . http://www.militaryhistoryonline.com/20thcentury/articles/macarthurandthecavalry.aspx
