My first thought was of the flares that used to hang over the former Ft. Ord during night training, before our esteemed and all knowing politicians deactivated one of the premiere Light Fighter Rapid Deployment Divisions, the 7th Infantry Division. So my next thought, far removed from the Military that protects us, was of Illuminated manuscripts, especially the Book Of Kells. I have this hanging on my wall, not from the Book of Kells, but from a local artist over in Santa Cruz.
The picture can be clicked on for a larger view
camera used was a Kodak EasyShare Z612
The artist's name is Jonathan Blocher,(I learned something new today, all these years I thought the artist's name was Blooker from his signature!! When I viewed the enlarged version--way larger than I intended!!--I noticed the name was actually Blocher, he is listed from a google search, and his work is still available) and the name of his company was Manuscriptures. These are all hand done and numbered. The light was not good and I could not managed to get the rich colors to come through.
It is hard for me to imagine the time and effort that went into making Illuminated manuscripts. Most are in latin or another language, so many times we cannot reflect on the words, but on the written word as art. So few survive extant today. They are truly a treasure. My background is a page from the Gospel of Mark.
Following a small write up about the Book of Kells are some links to the Book of Kells if you are interested.
"The supreme achievement of Irish Celtic art and one of the world’s pre-eminent examples of illuminated codices, the BOOK OF KELLS is a manuscript deluxe, written and richly adorned for use in the conduct of public worship. In its taste and delicacy, in its originality, and in its elaborations of coloring and design, the BOOK OF KELLS must be placed among the wonders of the world." -- B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library/C.W. Post Campus-Long Island University
"The Book of Kells was written around the year 800 AD and is one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world. It contains the four gospels, preceded by prefaces, summaries, and canon tables or concordances of gospel passages. It is written on vellum and contains a Latin text of the Gospels in insular majuscule script accompanied by magnificent and intricate whole pages of decoration with smaller painted decorations appearing throughout the text. The manuscript was given to Trinity College in the 17th century and since 1953 has been bound in four volumes. It has been on display in the Old Library since the 19th century. Two volumes can normally be seen, one opened to display a major decorated page, and one to show two pages of script." -- Trinity College Dublin/The University of Dublin (Where the Book of Kells is kept--John)

ReplyDeleteI'm just making the rounds this week-have a great weekend.
Okay....I have to admit ....I never heard of illuminated manuscripts until Mickey gave me the word and I looked it up....yes I thought I knew what it meant but I always look the word up anyways because it seems there's always a meaning I didn't know about ...and this time was no different....that's when I read about illuminated manuscripts. But leave it to your amazing brain to already know and have something at home to share with us. I told someone earlier this week what a fabulous teacher you are and here is proof. I think I've said it before to you also John...you would make a wonderful teacher or professor.

I had a collector's edition, leather bound of the Book of Kells. I gave it to my brother when we moved, trying to cut down on stuff. I like the fact that you came up with something a bit more original and out of the box from most.
ReplyDeleteA wonderfully creative take on this week's theme. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteUnique perspective on the theme. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh, one of the first things I thought of was Illuminated texts! I had just been looking at the Voynich Papers which must have reminded me, although I don't think they are what's known as illuminated (fascinating non the less)...this is a great choice!
ReplyDeletehttp://stillwandering.multiply.com/journal/item/120/Picture_Perfect_Photo_Friday_Circle-of-Eights_Illumination

ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your visit and comment on my bloıg.It was nice to see you again.
Have a nice weekend.
I have been fascinated with Illuminated Manuscripts for years now and have been eyeing a class at the local college on creating them.
ReplyDeleteGreat take on the topic!
Very very interesting take and information! Oh Gregorian chant reminds me of gothic abbeys!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit and comment. Yesss, I did well in that golf comp!
the picture frame is illuminated, too - both, in- and outside :-)
ReplyDeleteHe is looking at some kids playing down the street and waiting for his mommy. But his is still to little let roam ouside by hisself yet. 2. Book of Kells, I know I have seen them looking at it n PBS before but I can't remember why now. I wonder just for wonders sake. How many times one of them monks got 3/4 done on a page makes a mistake and just sorta changes the word. It sure would be hard to wad that sheep skin up and say o well let's start again. Take care.
ReplyDeleteVery cool take on the theme. I like it. The monks (?) are a perfect background song too. Well Done!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by mine too!
Glad you enjoyed "Skull Boy's" imagination - it did make for some humorous pics!
Here's mine ...http://redhotbrat.multiply.com/journal/item/55/March_27_2008_Picture_Perfect_Illumination
FABULOUS take on the them. Thank you so much for sharing and thank you so much for stopping by my page.
ReplyDeleteOutstanding entry! I appreciate all the work you put into the theme of illumination. I used to do calligraphy, so know the artistry, effort, care and time that a work like in your photo takes. I love the single musical line chant in contrast with the very ornamental writing. Thanks.
ReplyDeletevery profound!! :)
ReplyDeletebtw, thanks for watching the sunset with me :)
http://mobsilog.multiply.com/journal/item/80/picture_perfect_illumination
Gregorian Chant! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteAnd the verse of scripture, which speaks of illuminating oneself through study, illuminated lettering and all, is also illuminated by a bright light over all. Wonderful interpretation of the theme!
wow great picture, lesson and music! very illuminating! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI was going to do an illumination of this type as well, but I chose another photo instead. Seems we think alike! Great entry.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit.
I saw some Illuminated Manuscripts at the Getty Museum and fell in love with them.
ReplyDeleteAwesome. Thanks for the information. Unique and very "illuminating" take.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful writing. I like to writing in calligraphy. It's such a free flowing art!

Thanks for the stopping by and leaving the kind words! I thought of 2Tim 2:15 as well /:-)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful art work, glows from within... a history lesson and beautiful music to go with it.
ReplyDeleteI have seen some of the work in the Book of Kells.. very fascinating.
Thanks for the kind words and stopping by my post
Such interesting facts to go with that interesting photo, John. I am always amazed at how the artists and writers back in those days payed so much attention to detail... the intricacies of the print and drawings. Thank you for sharing and...
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my entry (http://oarafn1.multiply.com/journal/item/35) and for the sincere compliment.
Very nice.
ReplyDeleteThe workmanship and details are amazing!
ReplyDeleteMy gosh!!! The art of all that!! Great post...sure beats a skeleton and blacklight (the illuminated thing you were asking about). I can't imagine the work back then. What tediousness producing beautiful pieces such as those. Do you think it would be more of a stretch today to find individuals capable of the patience? My daughter does production work and loves the tediousness of it all...
ReplyDeleteWhat amazes me is that any of the message got through to us via these manuscripts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit.
awesome, really interesting to learn about these things. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a nice comment :D
ReplyDeleteDon't I wish it was Miss M...she is my all time best ever performer of all time. But, no, tis not her. Just a performer at The Zoo Boo last halloween. Thanks for stopping by...interesting take here. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteJohn... you blew the fins off this mer-girl. Very impressive... and the links were a joy to read. The artistry in this type of work is beyond the ordinary imagination. Excellent subject matter... thank you so much for sharing. Had to save the links to my favs... so I can revisit time and time again. My ancestry is Irish... so you touched a deep chord for me. ;^)
ReplyDeleteHow interesting! I had somehow thought of "illuminated" manuscripts when mulling over the word "illumination" (along with enlightenment etc.) but the biggest treat is knowing that the tradition is somehow preserved and people are still interested in them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit and yes, we did have snacks. :)
